Caroline Wright Exhibition Recollection

2006年に交流プログラムの交換作家として来日したキャロライン・ライトが、”記憶”を、ドローイングと再びその場所を訪れて捉えた写真で検証します。
同じ試みを行なった共同プロジェクトで、3月にイギリスを訪問した本校生の制作作品も同時展示いたします。

キャロライン・ライトは、英国Norwich University of the Arts と阿佐ヶ谷美術専門学校の国際交流プログラム”LOCUS”の交換作家として、2006年に初めて来日しました。当初のプログラムで彼女は、映像をベースとした制作を滞在中に行い、日英の共通の習慣である「お茶を飲む」行為をいろいろなロケーションに取材し、その文化を比較してみせる映像作品を発表しました。

今回、二度目の来日となる本プログラムでは、前回の滞在中の制作の合間をぬって訪れたいろいろな場所の断片的な記憶を辿り、写真やビデオなどの一切の視覚的な記録に頼らず、英国で制作したドローイングを発表します。それらのドローイングで、記憶する対象物が非常に克明に描かれていることにも驚かされますが、私たちの記憶が、いかに継続的な物語性を見いだしすらい、個々の断片の集合体で成り立っているかという事実に気づかされます。

来日3日目に、作家と共に、私は今回の展示作品の象徴的イメージでもある古びた石段を再び目撃するために、鎌倉を訪れました。

それは、
「最も有名な神社のそばにある。」
「多分、右へ曲がる道を上った角にある。」
「手前に広場がある。」
というヒントを頼りに歩く、一種スリリングな旅でした。同行した私自身が、彼女の4年前の記憶に入って行き、幸いにも彼女の正確な記憶の道案内によって正しい道を辿ることができたために、体験していないはずの記憶が、予言されたように次々目の前に展開される、非常に不思議な感覚を伴う体験でした。

遂に目の前に現れたその石段。

少し早い桜とともに、今、自分たちがそこに居て、まさにその場所を見ていることの不思議をしみじみと感じ、記憶の集積そのものが、私たちの生きている事実そのものであることを痛感しました。

それから早や数日、日々、着実にまた新しい記憶が積み重なり、それからの軌跡を私たちは作家が滞在中に制作した新作のポストカードのシリーズに見ることでしょう。記憶のドローングとは表現方法が異なるシリーズですが、彼女がいろいろな場所で手にした、美しい理想的な観光地の風景がプリントされていた画面から、たった一つの最も強い印象だけを塗り残して見せる、このシリーズでも、彼女は、私達の認識を検証する試みを行なっています。

また今後、これからの彼女の制作に、ことのほか無常のシンボルとして愛される日本の桜や、今年の寒い春の始まりの記憶が、どのような作品に結実して行くのか楽しみでなりません。
